Aineisto on koottu HELCOM jäsenvaltioiden lähettämien suojelualuekarttatasojen perusteella. Suojelualuemääritykset perustuvat HELCOM suositukseen 15/5 (1994). Suojelualueainestoa on päivitetty maiden lähettämien lisäysten perusteella vuosina 2009-2010 projektissa, joka analysoi HELCOM suojelualueverkoston ekologista koherenssia. Projektin kuvaus ja tulokset löytyvät julkaisusta: "HELCOM 2010. Towards an ecologically coherent network
